& Idalia, a fiction novel

At twenty-five years old, Duck has never been farther than 15 miles outside of her small town. All too familiar with rebuilding in the aftermath of hurricanes, she senses that something is different this time around. When Nellie’s house is destroyed by a fallen oak tree and she is forced to move in with Duck’s family, the women reevaluate their complicated, intimate relationship and contemplate leaving town for good. Told in flashbacks, this story explores the harsh reality of wanting to escape social and environmental downfall, while also not wanting to leave those you love behind in a town that won’t be standing much longer. Duck must decide if she is going to crawl her way out of the Florida swamp, or sink, going down taking care of the people she loves most.
